122. nowned artist Jehangir Sabavala died August 2nd morning of respiratory failure. He had been suffering from lung cancer. Sabavala is survived by his wife Shirin and daughter Aafreed. Sabavala painted in a style that was influenced by cubism and impressionism. His subjects were usually landscapes, figures and seascapes in pastels and muted colours.

125. China has conferred its highest literary award on B.R. Deepak for his book, which is a translation of 88 classical Chinese poems into Hindi. Prof. Deepak, who is from Centre of Chinese and Southeast Asian Studies, Jawaharlal Nehru University, was the first Indian to receive the “Special Book Award” for his contribution to Chinese studies, translation, publication of Chinese books.

126. State-run Steel Authority of India (SAIL) on 1 Septemebr 2011 announced the appointment of Anil Kumar Chaudhary as its director, finance. He succeeded Soiles Bhattacharya who retired on 31 August 2011.

127. The Central Government was considering the proposal to amend the Anand Marriage Act, 1909 so as to provide for registration of Sikh Marriages therein.

The Supreme Court on September 1st ordered Delhi's private hospitals, built on subsidised government land, to provide free treatment to the poor, saying they cannot "wriggle out" of their responsibility.   A bench of justice RV Raveendrana and justice AK Patnaik asked the city  hospitals to reserve 25% of their out-patient department capacity and 10% of beds at the indoor level for free treatment of the poor.

129. The Minister for Housing and Urban Poverty Alleviation Kumari Selja has said that as per the data released by the Planning Commission, there was an increase of about 44 lakhs urban poor in the country in the year 2004-2005 as compared to the year 1993-1994.

The “in-principle” approval has been accorded by the National Tiger Conservation Authority for creation of six new tiger reserves, and the sites are: (i) Pilibhit (Uttar Pradesh), (ii) Ratapani (Madhya Pradesh), (iii) Sunabeda (Odisha), (iv) Mukandara Hills (including Darrah, Jawahar Sagar and Chambal Wildlife Sanctuaries) (Rajasthan), (v) Kudremukh (Karnataka) and (vi) Kawal Sanctuary (Andhra Pradesh). Besides, the States have been advised to send proposals for declaring the following areas as Tiger Reserves: (i) Bor (Maharashtra), (ii) Suhelwa (Uttar Pradesh), (iii) Nagzira-Navegaon (Maharashtra) (iv) Satyamangalam (Tamil Nadu), (v) Guru Ghasidas National Park (Chhattisgarh), and (vi) Mhadei Sanctuary (Goa). Under section 38V of the Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972 State governments are authorised to notify an area as a tiger reserve on recommendation of the National Tiger Conservation Authority.

132. Former Supreme Court Judge Justice Shivraj V Patil was sworn in as the new Lokayukta of Karnataka on 3 August 2011. The oath was administered by Governor H R Bhardwaj at Raj Bhavan. Justice Patil succeeded Justice N Santosh Hegde who vacated office after completing eventful five-year tenure. Justice Patil headed the one-man committee to inquire into the 2G spectrum allocation

136. The Rashtriya Swasthya Bima Yojana (RSBY), providing for smart card based cashless health insurance cover of Rs. 30,000/- per annum per family to BPL families (a unit of five) in unorganized sector, has since been extended to domestic workers in the country.

140. The Global Sanitation Fund (GSF) programme to promote total sanitation and hygiene was launched in Assam. The programme  will support sanitation and hygiene promotion in eight districts of Jorhat, Nalbari, Kamrup, Cachar, Hailakandi, Goalpara, Sonitpur and Nagaon districts, covering 5,000 villages using a combination of Community-led Total Sanitation  and sanitation marketing approaches. The GSF aims to collaborate closely with the centre’s Total Sanitation Campaign (TSC) to raise the level of sanitation awareness for up to eight million people in the States of Assam and Jharkhand.
